February in Pasadena
Jan. 27th, 2019 07:43 pm============================================================================================================
We'll soon slip into February, and the Folk Music Society has two shows in this short month. We start with Honey Whiskey Trio, three young women who have been turning heads with their harmonies, and dramatic body percussion and movements, on Saturday, February 2, at 8:00 PM in Beckman Institute Auditorium.
Courtney, Ann Louise, and Christina develop and arrange their own stirring harmonies and body percussion (hand clappin', finger snappin', leg slappin', and foot stompin') with synchronized movements. On some songs, they play guitar, mandolin, banjo, and shruti box (come find out what that is!). They create, arrange, and explore music from the front porches, music halls, and hymn books of early America, sharing it with adults, students, and life-long music lovers across the United States. Lisa Forkish, of the A Cappella Association wrote, "They always leave you sitting at the edge of your seat, waiting with bated breath for each new beautifully executed phrase." Hear them sing their namesake song, Sweet Honey Whiskey and hear a good sampling of what they do here. These women give their all with their singing, and they just might steal your heart in the process!
Tickets for this show are $20 for adults, and $5 for children and Caltech students. You can purchase tickets at the Caltech Ticket Office, 1200 E. California Blvd (southeast corner of Wilson Avenue and California Blvd) between 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. You can buy tickets in person without a service charge, or by phone with a service charge at (626) 395-4652. Outside of visiting the Ticket Office, this is the best deal if you want to buy them in advance, because a single service charge applies to all tickets purchased in the transaction, including for multiple shows. You can also buy them online (a service charge per ticket and a per-order charge are applied) here until the end of Thursday, January 31. And you can buy them at the door for cash or check (no credit cards at the door.)
Parking for the Saturday show:
Most of you have probably been to a show in the last year, but If you haven't, be aware that a new building is going up near Beckman Institute and parking options are a little different now. The easiest parking is behind Beckman Auditorium (Big Beckman) at the end of Michigan Avenue, just south of Del Mar Boulevard. There are two parking structures on Wilson Avenue, where there will be ample parking. There is also street parking on Wilson Avenue. If you have GPS, put in either of the following addresses to be led right to them, 405 South Wilson Avenue., Pasadena or 341 South Wilson Avenue, Pasadena. Remember that after 5 PM, you can park in any space, even those that have individual names. If you need help with handicapped access, call (626) 616-4559 and we'll try to help. Read the 4th paragraph on our web page here for a bit more information and a link to a campus map.
Refreshment Volunteers & Social Media Help
We're still looking for volunteers to set up, store supplies, bake, and help manage our refreshment contingent at our concerts. Marguerite has done a tremendous job for us in the last two years, but other matters make her unable to continue the effort without significant assistance. Find out how you can help by replying to this message or calling her at (626) 676-5619. Volunteers get free admission to the shows, though dependability is crucial. And if you can help us boost our efforts with Instagram, Twitter or a more robust Facebook presence, let's talk- reply to this message. We can only continue to bring you these fine shows if we get the word out and sell enough tickets to pay these performers what they deserve.
The deservedly renowned Irish group, Lúnasa is our second show in February, at 8:00 PM in Beckman Auditorium (the big, round white building just east of our regular home in Beckman Institute.) The show will be Saturday, February 23 at 8:00 PM. In 20 years, Lúnasa has become one of the most influential bands on the Irish traditional scene. With their trademark integration of strings (guitar, fiddle and double bass) and winds (flute, low whistles and Uilleann pipes) and subtle rhythmic segues, Lúnasa never lets technical prowess overshadow the emotional punch of the tunes. Their seamless layering of instruments creates a feeling of dramatic, developing moods. Add Kevin Crawford’s wicked wit, and the heady mix of music and laughter will equal an evening you will not soon forget. Tickets are available now. We had to raise the price a bit, to $30 for adults and $10 for Caltech students and children (we have to cover the charges of using the larger hall), but you will definitely get your money's worth. Lúnasa tickets will be available for purchase by cash or check at the Honey Whiskey concert. There is no extra service charge if you buy them on the phone from the Ticket Office when you buy your HWT tickets. Hear them at Spain’s Ortigueira last year playing the opening tune from their latest CD, Cas, Tinker's Frolic.
