Those of us who are a distance away from the burned and flooded areas of Southern California are glad to have a bit of winter on our hands this week (at last!) and see our parched landscape get a respite from the drought.  Our hearts go out to those who have suffered so much in this mixed blessing.  Meanwhile, Jim Malcolm, the "ultimate Scots troubadour" is at home in Perthshire, starting to pack for his US West Coast tour, which will bring him to Caltech's Beckman Institute Auditorium (we call it "Little Beckman") on Saturday, January 27 at 8:00 PM.  Jim is a fine singer and guitarist, who writes original songs and he also covers lots of traditional songs, including compositions by some of Scotland's great writers, such as Robert Burns.  He plays a bit of harmonica, too.  Jim is a very funny guy and, between songs, we get exposed to stories about life in Scotland, the country's history, his travels, and more. Jim was lead vocalist for Old Blind Dogs (who are coming to Caltech on Feb. 23!) for about eight years, but he later went back to performing solo in favor of spending more time sharing his own compositions and traditional vocal interpretations.   Listen to him sing Robert Burns' Rantin Rovin Robin and see him perform the traditional Flowers of Edinburgh to sample both his music and his humor.  His own song, Neptune, is a moving plea to respect our fragile oceans before it is too late.   Jim has a broad repertoire and a brand new recording out, Spring Will Follow On, which we will tell you more about soon.

In a review of Jim's album, Alive in Perth, Clive Pownceby wrote in Living Tradition, "...here is a troubadour of substance playing guitar and harmonica with exemplary precision. Relaxed and amongst friends on his own patch at the Goodlyburn Theatre, he hit a peak that night last August, forging a very personal communion. His expressive voice, whether complementing a filigree picked guitar on the bittersweet The First Cold Day or regaling us with tall tales, is warm and engaging."  The reviewer concludes, "With a hushed reverence in the theatre at times, the whoops and yells at the end tell you that this gently-paced set has hit its collective spot."  Come hear Jim live on stage for yourself!

Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children.  You can order them on the phone by calling the Caltech Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652.  Online tickets are available here until Thursday, January 25.  You can avoid the service charge by purchasing tickets at the door on the night of the show or by visiting the Ticket Office in person at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena (Southeast corner of Wilson Avenue).  Their Office hours are 10 AM-4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.  Note that because of construction on campus, parking has shifted from just above Beckman Institute to the parking structures on Wilson Avenue (just across the street from Beckman Institute), as it was for our December concert.  This time, there will not be another large show on campus to complicate traffic.  We will tell you a bit more about the new parking arrangement in our next message.

Next week, Caltech's Office of Public Events will be presenting the exhilarating Latin dance music of Adonis Puentes and the Voice of Cuba Orchestra. in Beckman Auditorium (we call it Big Beckman) on Saturday, January 20 at 8:00 PM.   If you mention the Pasadena Folk Music Society when you buy tickets on the phone (626-395-4652), at the door, or at the Ticket Office, they will give you a $5 discount on each ticket!  Known as a soñero, Adonis sings ballads backed by the mix of Spanish guitars with African rhythms peculiar to Cuba. His album, Sabor a Café was nominated as World Music Album Of The Year at the 2014 Canadian Juno Awards (the Canadian Grammies). The recording consists of Adonis’ original compositions, and is notable for its sparkling production and dance-happy, horn-heavy songs.  Listen to Tumbando Mangos to hear their great sound.  See Public Events' page for more information.  Beckman Auditorium is the round "wedding cake" shaped building to the east of Beckman Institute, our usual venue.

We will be mentioning the upcoming Peter Yarrow concert on Saturday, February 10 in Ramo Auditorium (a short walk from "Little Beckman") in each of our messages to make sure you, who have supported our series in the past, have a chance to attend this special show, which starts at the unusual time of 7:00 PM.  Over half of the tickets have been sold, so there could conceivably be a sold-out program by the time the concert starts, but we just never know.  We will keep you posted as we get closer to the show.  Peter has been such an important voice since the 1960's, both with Peter, Paul and Mary, and in myriad other projects.   Peter co-wrote the classic Puff the Magic Dragon, The Great Mandella (you can hear it sung here by Peter and Richie Havens), and many other fine songs.  His song, Light One Candle is increasingly a standard in many synagogues during Hanukkah.  Peter, Paul and Mary helped popularize early Bob Dylan songs, such as their inspired version of Blowin' in the Wind.   There are tons of other songs they brought life to, and then songs and activities that Peter did outside of the trio.  He has lots of stories to share about all of these days which show the power of music and using our voices.  He will, of course, be singing plenty of familiar songs, too.  Come add your voice!  Ramo Auditorium is a bit larger than our usual auditorium, but it still is pretty intimate and has great visibility.  Tickets for this show are $30 for adults, $5 for children and Caltech students.  Call or visit the Ticket Office (see above) or order tickets online here.

We have just added a June 2 show, presenting Crary, Evans and Barnick.    The names may not immediately ring a bell, but each of them has performed in our series before.  Bill Evans is an outstanding banjo player who did a memorable all-banjo show, The Secret Life of Banjos with Jody Stecher back in 2006.  He is in high demand throughout the country and has played with many of the best musicians.  Wally Barnick was a founding member of the Cache Valley Drifters and has done shows for us with the Drifters, as well as the Hay Dudes.  He is known for his fine vocals and great bass guitar and he plays in numerous other configurations.   Dan Crary is an excellent guitarist and singer, who first performed at Caltech with Byron Berline and Jim Hickman, and later with Beppe Gambetta.  He performed again with Steve Spurgin and Martin Stevens and he also did a solo show with us.  We are really looking forward to hearing these three together!  We're still considering some other possible bookings, but unfortunately, we're running out of openings in our 2018 schedule.

Other shows coming up in 2018:  Old Blind Dogs, the New Kingston Trio, Tannahill Weavers, and John McCutcheon are just some of the names.  Wait till you find out more about the ones we didn't just mention here!  You can see the whole year at our web site, here.  Click on a show and get a brief description and a link to a video of each performer.  All shows are Saturdays, except Old Blind Dogs, which is on a Friday.  With a couple of exceptions, tickets for most of these shows are available now.  You can order them on the phone by calling the Caltech Ticket Office at (626) 395-4652 and you can visit the Ticket Office in person at 1200 E. California Boulevard in Pasadena.  There is only one service charge for phone orders, even if you order tickets for multiple shows.

Y'all get the most interesting folks, people we've actually heard of, for astonishingly affordable prices. The catch is, as my spouse says, it's a bit of a drive [from ATL]. ;(
