John McCutcheon returns to Pasadena!
Oct. 31st, 2018 08:41 pmThe Pasadena Folk Music Society is happy to welcome back John McCutcheon, masterful singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, storyteller, and social activist. John will be here in two weeks, on Saturday, November 10 at 8:00 PM in Beckman Institute Auditorium ( "Little Beckman," not the larger Beckman Auditorium.) John has performed at Caltech six times, and people keep asking us to have him back. Some want to hear his wizardry on the hammered dulcimer or be connected to the labor union movement, both of which you will hear on Step by Step. Some want to connect with progressive political change and stories of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and other great figures and events in history, as in John's version of This Land is Your Land, along with his great introduction. Sample one of his fine original songs, Water from Another Time. We suspect he will bring his usual array of instruments, guitar, autoharp, banjo, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, and maybe a few others. We'll be supplying keyboards for him.
John is a Wisconsin native, and as a summa cum laude from Minnesota’s St. John’s University, he literally “headed for the hills,” forgoing the college lecture hall for a time, choosing eastern Kentucky coal camps, union halls, country churches, and square dance halls as his classroom. He recently said, “It was a three-month independent study that I’m still on 45 years later. I went off thinking I was learning how to put my fingers in the right place, and all of a sudden, it was about everything—the context of the music, the community that fosters the music, and the music that sustains the community. I fell in love with the region, the land, the people, the music, and the food.” John's apprenticeship to many of the legendary figures of Appalachian music embedded a love of not only home-made music, but a sense of community and rootedness. His repertoire includes traditional songs and tunes, selected songs from other writers, and he has gone on to write hundreds of his own, receiving more than his share of accolades. His eclectic catalog of ballads, historical songs, children’s songs, love songs, topical satire, fiddle and hammer dulcimer instrumentals, and even symphonic works are among the broadest in American folk music. We certainly hope you will join us for this show!
Tickets for this show are $25 for adults, and $5 for children and Caltech students. You can purchase tickets at the Caltech Ticket Office, 1200 E. California Blvd (southeast corner of Wilson Avenue and California Blvd) between 10AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday without a service charge, or by phone with a service charge at (626) 395-4652. Outside of visiting the Ticket Office in person, this is the best deal if you want to buy them in advance, because a single service charge applies to all tickets purchased in the transaction, even for multiple shows. Order your tickets for Kevin Burke (December 15) at the same time! You can also buy them online (a service charge is applied for each ticket) here until the end of Thursday, November 8. This is a show that could possibly sell out, either before the night of the show, or soon after we begin selling tickets on the night of the show. We will keep you posted about the availability of tickets as we get close.
Parking for the Saturday show:
Most of you have probably been to a show in the last year, but If you haven't, be aware that a new building is going up near Beckman Institute and parking options are a little different now. The easiest parking is behind Beckman Auditorium (Big Beckman) at the end of Michigan Avenue, just south of Del Mar Boulevard. There will be a show in Ramo Auditorium the same night, so it may be necessary to park in one of the structures on Wilson Avenue, where there will be ample parking. There is also street parking on Wilson Avenue. If you have GPS, put in either of the following addresses to be led right to them, 405 South Wilson Avenue., Pasadena or 341 South Wilson Avenue, Pasadena. Again, click on the above link for further information, including a link to a campus map. Remember that after 5 PM, you can park in any space, even those that have individual names. If you need help with handicapped access, call (626) 616-4559 and we'll try to help. Read the 3rd paragraph on our web page here.
Our next show will feature Kevin Burke on Saturday, December 15 at 8:00 PM. Kevin is the fine Celtic fiddler who started out with the Bothy Band, and since has played with Patrick Street, Open House, the Celtic Fiddle Festival, and in many other combinations, since. He will be playing his solo, "naked fiddle" show with us, a format that many look forward to. .After that, we begin the year on January 12 with a combined show featuring Susie Glaze, known for her fine bluegrass-and-beyond shows at Caltech in past years, and Lauren Sheehan from the Pacific Northwest, who will be making her debut in our series. They share a deep connection to traditional American music with two divergent paths See more about the show here and visit our main page, PasadenaFolkMusicSociety.org
